Studio brief 02 - Photography rebranding

I was asked to create an image of a photographer's identity. Their work is very bold and has a female focus, the work is empowering and the photographer wanted to convey this within a logo and business card design.

Approached via online - facebook.

I suggested that she make a Pinterest board of her desired aesthetic and for me to get a better idea of what she wanted.

Visuals were provided for the inspiration of the work and the desired aesthetic and tone of the work.

Based on tattoo aesthetic, depictions of women that are feminine but also strong and bold.

Grace's photography

Using this as also inspiration and a basis of tone.

Development

Throughout the work, I was able to gain feedback very frequently from online communication.

The very basic first idea, this was made to establish the shape of the image etc.

Made the face more feminine based on feedback and to fit the brand of the photographer more closely.

Added a red colour but this wasn't received well and looked too provocative for a business card according to feedback.

From meeting in person we were able to discuss things in more detail.
  • She wanted to keep the design minimal in colour to make it bold.
  • Thought the design looked a bit too flat and needed more detail
I found this image online and it served as a lot of inspiration of how to approach the face of the logo.

I added more detail to the face of the image by adding more shapes for the eyes and the lips, creating a 'shine effect' creating an more depth.

This received a lot better feedback than the previous designs

This was the final design chosen

Along with this was the back of the business card.

She wanted the back to be bold with the design. And also within the wording to be quite ambiguous and not be labelled just a photographer as she wants to venture into art direction.

Development

Final design

Based on feedback, text aligned to become more in unison.

I didn't experiment with more type as Grace was really happy with what was initially chosen

I developed it further to be neater and better suited on a business card.

Grace was really happy with the outcome and used it on her Instagram identity as well as posting about it on her Instagram feed.

Overal I found this a really enjoyable mini project. This was because of how well we knew each other and how often we met up, sticking to a schedule to meet was really important to the success of this project as well as honesty in the feedback and the way which we communicated online really easy and the response time.

It was really interesting to do a style that I wasn't used to, it took me out of my comfort zone and I was happy I did it. It definitely showed that me that I'm capable of doing other styles and this can be to my benefit when approaching a different variety of brands.

I also suggested for further development that the image could be made into an animated gif to give a website more interesting quality.

Studio brief 07 - Self care - Research

Mental health amongst students

"It's time for universities to put students mental health first" - Jon Wakeford

Simply googling students and mental health there are shocking headlines which come up straight away surrounding the topic, it's very apparent that there is a massive issue surrounding mental health.

Consider why student mental health is so poor, why is it happening. The main issue is that universities not having enough support and accessible ways in which to gain help

Possible resolutions to improve the way students are informed about their well-being

Looking at these resolutions and how they can be emulated and presented within other mediums and ideas in an accessible way for students.

Educational environments which promote self-care:

James Madison University

This is the only instance of this sort of thing being presented in an educational environment that has been found upon research.

A self-care station:

Provides steps through the printed material for students to make them more active and aware of their own self-care in a university environment.

This idea is definitely interesting to consider in the context of the brief goals and whether this can be further developed into a more accessible outcome which also considers cost and engagement visually in a purely printed format.

Although this isn't a definitive solution for the massive issue itself it is a consideration in which an educational environment can make a simple change within its space to consider how to make self-care more of a priority.

Studio brief 03 - Vegan festival - Research & Outcome

This online resource provides material which children can use. This was the main source in understanding what tone to take with the work.

Although this is a useful resource, translating this into a festival content is a unique aspect.

Children's book

This book is aimed at creating compassion for children, the visuals are bright and playful and the content is educational and is engaging towards children because of this.

Its useful to use this as an example since it is a piece of printed media which targets the same audience.

Feedback:

The colouring pages were sent in the post to friends with children

Feedback

"“The kids absolutely loved the colouring sheets my youngest especially, they actually wanted to colour them straight away when they came in the post”
“She loved the characters and spent a while colouring the animals in, I’ve put the pictures on the fridge”
“They would love some more of these animal characters! I think making a little book of them would be great!”
“They really liked the stickers as well, possibly having a place to put the sticker like a little book would be really nice!

Studio brief 03 - Vegan festival

The brief

The concept for this brief came from the interest within visuals for children and the desire to influence spaces with the design.

Vegan festivals are designed to engage with adults, however many children attend this event and there is often times lack of specific activity for them to do. By creating a piece of interactive work there is the ability to engage with a young audience within this environment.

Papergang - Pitch a papergang competition (26th March)

Design a box and the products inside in the chance to have the design featured on the next month's subscription box

Initial ideas

Basic shapes - space theme?

Started with basic shapes, no physical drawn development as an attempt to try working solely digitally and seeing how far it can be developed.

- Space isn't connected to a season which could be good and not seem to attach or associated with the box itself

Visual inspiration

Artist Shawna X works within a pure vector manner, her work for this project was inspiring to observe in the way she works.
