In understanding grids looking at other material serves as an important resource, for example the redesign of  The independent redesign revealed a new look referring to the “gorgeous and radical” look of when the paper first launched in 1996. The aim of the redesign was to reflect the “bold” and “forthright” but “sophisticated” tone of the paper. Launched with new design but 2013 to look at more groundbreaking approach, rebrand was part of that.

As well as format, the tone of a papers voice can differ dramatically from another conveying a completely different tone overall, we can see this when the same story has been presented but handeled different, such as

Taking a random page from a newspaper and using tracing paper to map out where the grids are within the publication I could then map out and better understand the benefits of its design, analyzing whether it works within the context of the information and tone of the paper as a whole.

The grid in this design has been used this publication allows the text to have breathing space, the separation of the information allows  heircachy to be given to the image  bringing it to a focal point overall making this page effectively edited.
