Listening to how the track has been constructed, how it can be interpreted in a creative way.

Peter Saville explains creating Joy Division's unknown pleasures cover:

Without knowing the future of Joy Divisions direction, he was aware that most bands knew what they wanted to create so with this he created quite an ambiguous design. Saville saw an astronomy book an image comparative to frequency to pulser which researchers set up an array of telescopes to capture the waves, the comparative charts of the signal was the final image.

The design has since become a well recognized template thats been endlessly interpreted in various formats.

I've gone slightly in this same mindset as this and been interested in looking at scientific imagery for inspiration.I found an interesting story of an amplifier and the image looked interesting and obscure, although not very closely related as a design could work for a cover of possibly an album.

Wes Wilson is a significant name in the era of designers during the 60's and has become heavily associated with the prevalent music and peace movement of the time.

Wilson is known for his inventive style of font which has a sense  of movement and fluidity.

Contextual research of colour:

Highlighting colour that has been commonly used on popular albums of Tame Impalas same genre. Something significant that Ive noticed is that they all use similar colour choices.

These colours are useful in making more informed choices with the design of my own designs and understanding what is effective on the cover of the same genre that I'm targeting.

Start of initial idea; the idea was to show heartbreak and the emotion of heartbreak, although this may be too literal whereas something more creative and ambiguous could be more effective. I'd like to add more colours and patterns influenced by further research.

For inspiration I found an article on Huffington post about a desinger called Brooke Roberts who used brain scans as a base for a pattern, as the song in question relates to painful memory  or seeing something upsetting I thought this could maybe work in this case as well as it did here.

When asked why brain scans appealed to him he said " I can't really pinpoint the reason they appeal to me. I am fascinated by the structures and they look beautiful to me. I see shapes and patterns in them that I think are very attractive – they look designed and deliberate"

I saw this image and is inspired me to look at the brain for what I would create.
I thought since the song is about upset and about someone that you loved in the past being with someone else it'd be interesting to have the brain as a focus as without much thought the brain has beautiful and interesting patterns that could be interesting as a album cover design.

I used the above image in illustrator and looked at my previous research to inform the choices of colour I would use.

With that I then made the choice of which looked the most effective

this is the design I chose to submit

Evaluation:

As a whole I'm happy with the outcome of my deign, I was able to visually record my progress as well as including well informed research of the aspects of my design ideas, which has been backed up with contextual research from other creators. I enjoyed the challenge of creating something outside of my normal genre and the potential to which my creativity could show through. I think with more effective time management I would of liked to have done some more variations and possibly add more to the design but overall I'm satisfied with the outcome.
