Idea 1: Undoubtedly a city provides a lot of diversity with a range of different means of advertisement, its interesting that there are parts of a city that go un-noticed and why.
Its normal that we look at things that are bright and big like billboards and posters, but to question why we do this and why we don't really notice the aesthetic in smaller parts of the city, like the functional type like on the signs around a city or graffiti.
As well as providing imagery for this book I think to also be analytical of why we don't always notice things and why some forms of type/art go un-noticed, whether that's for its scale, positioning or whether it runs deeper than that.
Idea 2: The purpose would be in order to highlight Leeds and make a guide
Question I want my book to answer: Is there beauty in the everyday?
Idea 1: What are the connotations of the city images and how can they be challenged and changed? It'd be useful to look at what other people think of certain type and what impact it has. Things such as signs, traffic signals, chalk writing, lighting, little bits of graffiti etc, can there be an aesthetic to these and how can this be presented effectively?
Another possible question: What is Leeds?
Idea 2: putting Leeds into context and pulling together the different type that surrounds the city area, and from this creating an informative guide.
Book Proposal Outline
The hook:
Idea 1: The main idea for publication is to explore the range of diversity that is within Leeds into a book format, looking at the often forgotten pieces of type that we see everyday or some that we might just miss. I think there is a lot of value in looking at what we see and what we think of that.
Idea 2: From the collected content there is
Summary and purpose of the book:
Idea 1: This books purpose it to highlight a large urban environment, but to capture the essence of a city by capturing the small parts of what make it functional and unique as well as interesting. There are often parts of a city that go un noticed, and in this case a lot of type that is a lot of times forgotten.
Idea 2:
Target market:
Idea 1: The audience of this is not specific really as anyone who's interested in design and art, but also likes the image of the city, and maybe even anyone interested in questioning societal norms in terms of what is commonly seen as
Idea 2: There are several target markets which would be possible to market to. One being tourists, and others being anyone interested in the city of Leeds, and those with an interest in design and typography.
Uniqueness of the book:
Idea 1: There are a plethora of other content revolving around urban exploration and such and looking at
however there are little that explore the everyday of a city, I think theres value in presenting this content and how it can be visually engaging.
Idea 2: In terms of uniqueness there are a lot of art based projects based around leeds for a tourist audience. However to make a purely unique type would be
Distribution plan/ Production:
Idea 1: The overal goal for this book idea is for it to be in an art book/photography based. Since the images play such a big role in the content and the message, to mass produce it may take away its aesthetics and not convey what was originally planed to show.
Idea 2: The mass production of this content would be a lot easier as it purely would be informative rather than being aesthetically pleasing.
Feedback:
There was more interest first idea of exploring the idea of making something that's forgotten and deemed 'unattractive' and to challenge this has a lot of uniqueness making it a stronger premise.
Another bit of feedback there was to consider is to observe the idea of what signs in certain places are so common place they've almost lost their meaning and become more of a symbol then a set of type and to maybe change the wording of everyday signs in editing could be interesting to see if an audience notices a change or whether its so universal its still deemed to be just how it was.
There is potential for commentary as well as aesthetics that can be explored in this publication, giving it
To gather differing opinions on what others find engaging/pleasant to look at in a publication could help better inform the target audience, as its potential audience is aimed at those with an interest in design.
There is a conclusive idea of what can be created and what logical direction to take. I think there is potential in my idea and to acknowledge the limitations and start looking into production and layout thats appropriate for the content and answers the question I've set to answer with my work.
