OUGD404 - Study Task

Proximity

Proximity or closeness creates a bond between elements on a page, how close or not the elements are places suggests a relationship (or lack of) between what are otherwise disparate parts,

unity is also achieved by using a third element to connect distant parts.

Are title elements together? is contact information all in one place? do frames and boxes tie together or seprerate related elements in document?

Alignment

Alignment brings order to chaos how you align type and image on a page and in relation to each other can make your layout easier or more difficult to read, foster familiarity.

Repetition / consistency

repeating design elements and consistent use of type and graphics styles within a document shoes a reader where to go and helps them navigate your designs and layouts safely. Ensure that your document utilises the principles of repetition, consistent and unity in page design.

Do page numbers appear in the same location from page to page? are major and minor headlines consistent in size style and placement =? have you used and a consistent graphic or illustration style throughout?

How image is composed how the type will be set up the page

Grids & Proportions

Fibionacci & Golden Ratio

Ratio 8:13

1.62

Forms  the basis of paper sizes and its principles can be used as a means of achieving balances designs Many ancient cultures from egyptian to the greeks used this thinking to gain beautiful designed proportions.

The human face follows the ratio we find people whose faces are truer to the ratio more attractive?

Classic renaissance masterpieces architecture from antiquty and even human body parts are proportioned based on the ratio down the fingers themselves

you can find balance without symmetry

Canons

Principles of page layout design used to measure and describe proportions, margins and print area.

Page proportioned in the golden ratio or golden section "34:21". The text area and margin proportions are determined by the starting page proportions.

Rules of graphic design:

Analysing different elements that are deemed as important and analysis to what extend they are:

Mind map of collective ideas:

With all these elements in mind I think its interesting to look at whats important, its also interesting if we look at publications and different examples of design that rebel against these ideas.

Pretty Ugly

Visual rebellion in design

Released by two points.net, pretty ugly is a collection of recent creations varieying from graphic design, furniture design, art and photography. The unusual or negatively perceived forms, colors, and perspectives shown here may still be considered by some to be ugly, but they are already influencing the creative vanguard of the future.

I personally think the saying 'beauty is in the eye of the beholder' is very true, an example of this can be seen in Picassos  The Young Ladies of Avignon which originally was scorned for its obscurity, but now has a massive importance in cubism.
