Studio Brief 02 - Design for screen - Interface research

The Brief
  • Investigate and question what user interface is and how we interact with it.
  • Think about interests, try and work within that area.
  • User experience and user interface are used interchangeably, but they shouldn't be.

Halifax banking app

Intended experience is made quite clear from their marketing campaigns.  I've found from personal use for this to be true.

Is it vegan? app

Intended user experience:

"Is It Vegan is a tool for anyone interested in eliminating animal products from their diet.
Simply scan the UPC bar code on the package of any food or beverage product. A summary classifying the list of ingredients, detailed list showing which ingredients are vegan"
"After putting each ingredient into a category, Is It Vegan then decides whether the product is suitable for a vegan or vegetarian diet"
Using the app:
When opening the app the intended use is can be confusing and not very engaging. Its slow to load and there.
Uber

Intended user experience:

"The app experience is designed to be as simple and seamless as possible– taking into account the user’s interaction with the app, their driver, fellow passengers and more." - From the uber website

Using the app:

Opening the app reveals the immediate intended use of the users current location, making it very engaging to the user.

Trainline
The intended user experience:

"Our mission is to help people travel smarter, and by using their phones they can enjoy the advantages of saving money by buying in advance and ensuring they have real time travel updates during their journey."

Created by Studio Blackburn, briefed to create a new look based around the brand concept of “smarter journeys”.

Using the app:

The navigation around this app is really user friendly. The page immediately opens to a

Amazon

Intended user experience:

Being quick and easy to access and use the features such as one click and "instant streaming" theres the strong essence that there is a priority of convenience.

However its weakness in the layout is when it comes to the two formats of purchasing and streaming, making the streaming service seem the same as purchasing. If there was a difference of layout could better differentiate the different formats making it a lot easier for the user to navigate around.

Using the site:

Amazon is very consistent in appearance. The functioning of one click ordering is extremely useful and a great for the user. Theres a sense of easy when purchasing something.

As a streaming service its not got the same experience as purchasing. Theres a wide range of genres to watch in movies and shows, however theres a lack of engagement. Its a huge part of amazons appeal and yet the interface on the website has poor navigation. There isn't a clear separation of genres.

Compared to streaming services

Netflix is an example of a site that from when you open the app or the website there, the use is very clear. There is a sense of excitement. Theres usually a large image of what different shows are new or popular.

Each section is divided into

Social Media

Intended user experience:

Fun, open, interactive, quick and easy to use.

Using the app:

Its really simple to use. Its obvious what the intended use is. It opens up straight away onto the camera feature which is great for capturing quick moments. Theres a sense of fun to the app with the various filters.

Brief description of format
