Defining ethics

Moral principles that govern a persons behaviour or the conduction of an activity. 

Having an awareness of the state of the planet and the change and evolution of society. 

Q: Do you think ethics is important in graphic design? 

There definitely is a need for a set of ethics with individual designers and their practice. The more aware a designer is the better and more informed impact they can make.  

Q: What defines "good" graphic design?

According to Milton Glaser."Good graphic design is good citizenship" In design there is the potential to spread a message whether thats good or bad. In terms of good graphic design there should be an awareness of issues in order to make a positive impact. Its in the presentation of these issues that makes the design good or bad. 

Q: What does ethical practice entail in graphic design? 

There is understanding in research.  

Sustainability 

Commonly refers to these three areas

• Social
• Economic 
• Environmental 

Q: How does sustainability relate to ethics?

Ethical practice, interest in sustainable practice. Packaging requires physical materials, using resources and how those resources and materials are made and accessible and how the distribution and production plays into this.

Q: How practical and achievable do you think this is? 

Its easy for every designer to have accessibility to information in awareness.

We pair good design with positive impact by creating memorable brand , implementing environmentally responsible practice.

Financial 

"Creating financially viable work focuses on the design issues that effect the costs of distribution."

Social

The overall question posed but this agenda is about whether the finished design benefits the individual consumer.

Group discussion 

Apply the sustainability issue mapping to one of the D&AD or YCN brief as a group 

The consideration of these various approaches is interesting and relevant to personal design decisions  and ethics.
