Studio brief 02 - Responsive - Collaborative brief - Monotype - Initial themes & Research

North Korea

Background:

Populated by 24.9 million people under the leadership of Kim-Jong-Un. The country has a lot of different perceptions and unknown information. There is a lot of information that we don't know and there's a lot of intrigue in North Korea, it's heavily been perceived as a very secretive country with a strict regime.

Reasoning

The interest in looking at this as the topic of interest is the different perceptions in which North Korea has been represented in media and the limited information that we've been allowed to see.

It would be interesting to explore this and represent a culture in which is purely has negative perceptions.

North Korea - Research

Inside perspective:

"On the Run in North Korea" - Koryo Collective

(source: https://www.leedsconfidential.co.uk/arts-entertainment/art/the-yorkshire-photographers-bringing-north-korea-to-north-street)

With a lot of risk three Yorkshire photographers Koryo Collective (Kate Clark, Paul Mckay, Luke O'Connor) venture to North Korea to explore the ins and outs of the culture.

As a result, there is a range of images being described as "from the mundane, unusual, and downright weird suitably satisfied my cultural curiosity"

Having an insight into the North Korean environment establishes a better understanding of how they are currently living and how that can be translated to an audience.

Type in Korea

Due to the lack of information surrounding the true inner working of North Korea, there is perhaps better understanding of the culture of how the design represents the country in different aspects.

In creating a set of Hangeul the most commonly seen are Batang and Drum by default. These seem the clearest and most legible regarded as "national fonts"

These fonts were developed by Choe Jeong-ho and Choe Jeong-Sun (first generation type designers). The time after the Korean war in the 1950's, there was difficult but they developed them despite the hardship.

Choe Jeong-ho completed the development of the Batang font (바탕체) and Drum font (돋움체) both of which are suitable for publishing.

Music and subculture

Background

Throughout history, music and subcultures have been misunderstood.

Subcultures have been known as being a reaction to something, whether its just from the music of politics. For example, the punk movement has many times been misrepresented as a movement, its original ethos was founded of rebellion and reaction to the mainstream and now been used in commercial context.

In context of graphic design and the mediums in which they are used in.

  • Punk subculture - consideration of technique such as traditional typeset, collage.

Modernist (beginning in 19th to the mid-20th century)

Within the future to look at a platform which is not yet been used in expressing type. This can be informed with contextual and in-depth research.

Past present and future

In the use of past present and future, there is a foundation created in this, there is the opportunity for the themes to be changed within this in fitting with other themes and issues. Etc this foundation can be adapted to the idea of North Korea and the type within that culture.
