Switches (controls)

shy switch  - 

when pressed - refereed to as a shy layer - clicking when blue makes all of the layers merge together. Toggling layers, more organised in working. (rarely used)

Quality 

Motion blur

For objects that are moving, turning on the master switch for this to be applied to the whole composition - creates a sense of movement . Not as harsh edges. 

Adjustment layer 

Drag the effect onto a layer effecting that element. Enable to adjust colour and contrast ect. Theres the opportunity to enable the effects in a key frame with the clock symbol. 

Anything beneath the adjustment layer will be effected.

Masking a background

Using track 

draw rectangle over the object to desired size then

under the track menu select alpha inverted matt shape layer 1 

anything put underneath this will show.
