Common Mistakes Made in Book Production
Editorial design
The form of the book - 1991 Jan Tschihold Essays of the morality of good design Collection of essays focusing on typography, type and image.
Be aware of the points made, don't always follow, break the rules but for a reason, always an informed reason.
Deviant Format:
Books that are needlessly large, heavy and wide, Books 'have to be handy' according to Tschihold
Inarticulate and shapeless typesetting
as a consequence of suppressing indents Unfortunately this bad habit is encouraged by business schools who teach, quite erroneously that writing letter without indent is 'modern'
Indenting Paragraph - Having more white space makes the text easier to read and more approachable.
Lack of form
The chapter should be distinct from the text, different size or typeface.
Paper
White and even stark white. Highly unpleasant for the eyes and offensive against the health of the population. Slight roninig (ivory and darker but never creme) Never oever obtrusive is usually best.
Book covers
White book covers, equally confounding, they're about as delicate as a white suit. Book covers are there be interacted with and they can become messy very easily, take into consideration the amount of people handling.
Spine
Flat spine on bound the spines of bound books must be gently rounded (easy to flick through, keeps the pages aligned.
Lettering on spines
Title on the spines don't need to be legible from afar.
No lettering on the spine at all- inexcusable for book more than 3mm thick.
Ignorance or disregard for the correct use of small caps, cursive, and quotation marks. Be aware of the correct quotation marks
The form of the Book Book
Content stems from Tschihold - the actual format of the book is set as the golden ratio.
How this essay has informed me:
This essay was useful as it showed me that there are different preferences in production and no set rule. Something thats said a lot is that. The language used in this essay is aggressive and assertive. almost saying that this is the only way things should be done.
