Studio brief 01 - Responsive - In Cold Blood - Previous winners research

Previous winners

Theres an importance in looking at previous winners, there is a bit more context in what judges look for in a book design.

These covers are relatively simple, but they work really well and send a clear message, the colour use is notable effective in that it has been limited to either two or three, the ledgibiltity of the images comes through with this as information is allocated a darker type in contrast with a lighter background, theres a simplicity to the work but these considerations make it a lot more effective as an outcome.

With the tone of this book the type fits well in context, the use of colour is feminine but the type isn't in its bold appearance initially however the decorative serifs bring subtle femininity but also a sense of boldness, the message of the book is very clearly illustrated within these considerations and are extremely effective.

Theres a playfulness as well as a personal touch in the use of illustrative elements as the circling different letters while also bringing focus to the wording effectively.

Keeping in mind these outcomes is important when it comes to individual practice as there are techniques to be acknowledged as well as establishing what style and tone the judges find effective, although the judges differ with each competition, there is still something to be considered with these covers being chosen as being successful.
