Studio brief 01 - Leeds public spaces - Layout experimentation

In an attempt to achieve the best result in a print, these are several of the designs which have been adjusted, primarily in the use of type, observing which is the most effective and considering the appropriateness to use in the context of celebrating the penny bazaar and the time period it was founded in.

Experiment 1

In order to best express, the celebratory nature of there was an importance in trying layouts and experimenting with the use of typography.

Experiment  2

Adjusting the layout of the text, to the centre, bringing focus to the lettering, separating the message to make it easier to read.

Experiment 3

Another attempt at trying to make the message as clear as possible.

Experiment  4

Using Festival budaya XXXXI on these different outcomes. The justification for this type is to give the appearance boldness while retaining a vintage look, this type is similar to different work around the era of 1880's.

Experiment  5

Changing the positioning of the type. The decorative nature of the lettering adds a lot to the personality and the desired celebratory nature.

Experiment - Trying colour

Green to match the subject matter of marks and spencers, using the old colour of the penny bazaar and the colour that's used in their current campaigning.

Trying an earthy tone, based off of research, however, the colour, in contrast, is too dark and the text doesn't stand out very well there is a lack of balance between image and text.

Feedback

The different outcomes were printed to see the impact that the visuals had within a printed context, although not done in a traditional medium, it was informative in evaluating the impact of the work and also provided an easier opportunity to gain feedback on the designs in a printed context. With printing a physical copy also showed the effectiveness of the colour that was being used and how legible the message of the work was from a distance in the function of being an events poster.

Feedback

  • More detail needed
  • Change the focus, too must focus on the text rather than the object
  • Use of the penny? Make more apparent
  • Text overwhelms the items too much - find a balance between the two to illustrate the intended message
