Studio brief 02 - Product, range and distribution - Specified research

To further understand food waste within the UK there are reliable sources to refer to, one of the most prominent for collecting data around waste habits is WRAP. WRAP's main concern is food waste, their vision is to deliver practical solutions and improve efficiency within resources and accelerate sustainable resource usage and efficiency by looking and fixing how we design in order to sell different products, thinking about how we use and interact with products, also re-defining the potential in sustainability through sustainable behaviour such as reuse and recycling.

WRAP is also connected to the 'Love food, hate waste' campaign which also has a lot of useful information around food waste, which is provided as a helpful source for those wanting to be sustainable in the way they prepare food, research and education within this
area etc.

This data presents the large amount of avoidable waste per household. The avoidability in this data is quite significant, with is noteworthy to take into consideration. This is evidence that there is a need to address food waste as an issue and provide better sustainable and practical solutions to combat this data with thorough research and considerations.

Some of the most wasted food in the UK

Data showing comparison of avoidable household food and drink waste between
2007 and 2011.

There has been an improvement within household waste in the UK however the rate of waste for fruit and vegetables is relatively no different in the five years in comparison, meaning the issue has validity in exploring further.

Data showing the reason food was thrown out in UK households.

Its apparent that the largest reason of not being used in time shows there is a need for better  information within packaging and more efficient preservation of foods.

Data showing the level of avoidable waste within different food groups.

Its apparent that fruit and veg is the most wasted amongst the various groups, the level of avoidability being the most noticeable amongst the data.

Specific vegetables that are wasted and the level of avoid ability each item has. Potatoes have the largest amount of avoidable waste in quite significant levels.

data (below) shows this regarding fruit. Bananas being the most wasted in avoidable and unavoidable within food waste, and apples being the second most wasted in unavoidable food waste. Its quite significant the amount of unavoidable waste that bananas have however the consumption of them and the amount of skin they have could be a reason for this. Apples being so high in the avoidable section is questionable. Apples within supermarkets are given in large amounts, this data could possibly be an indication of this.

This particular data shows the issue into perspective, the data shows that the food wasted in the UK is mostly always avoidable.
