Studio brief 01 - Leeds Public spaces - Development - Colour

Colour was important to consider with its effectiveness with the location being presented.

There were various messages and feelings that colours were used to convey specifically. With the event being set within the Victorian era, there was a consideration for accurate colours within the time as well as fitting within the tone and message and visuals of the original establishment.

However, there were a lot of muted neutral tones. These were considered within the effectiveness of application within the context of the subject matter and imagery.

Experiment  1

Colour palette developed from research within different media around the era,
victorian specifically.

Along with the chosen colours, Bookman old style has been used as the type of choice. It's bold in appearance with strong serif detailing making it an effective

Feedback

  • Effective colour choice makes for a bold and bright appearance.
  • The wording stands out against the drawn images

Experiment -  2

Feedback

  • Colours are effective and give an accurate essence of the era.
  • Explore more typography in a decorative nature
Experiment  3

Birmingham Tilting bolt - the type resembles a lot of types used at the time with the height of the lettering and the decorative style of the series.

Experiment 4

The chosen colours for this particular design was informed by research into effective colours schemes of 1880's through different media such as poster print designs packaging etc which I was able to identify and consider in this context.

  • Framing around the image is effective it gives a lot more decoration to the work, considering this as a lino print there may be limitations in trying to recreate this?
  • Not very legible from a distance, something bolder could be a lot more appropriate and easier to read. Keeping the decorative nature could be the most appropriate.
  • This colour scheme seems like it fits best with the time frame and with the nature of the print in technique and style

Experiment 5

This experiment was inspired by 1880's colour palettes with darker earthy tones, with a pop of colour to illustrate the title in comparison.

Feedback

  • This design is effective but is a little bit dull in appearance
  • The red within the design is effective but it doesn't really fit with the rest of the colours - possibly explore the red further?

Experiment 6

This colour experiment was a much different approach, attempting to fit with the 'excitement' element with the composition and further push this with the use the colour to communicate it.

In the interest of the medium being used (lino print) recreating this composition of colours might prove to have difficulties.

Feedback

  • The colours are bright and bring a lot of attention however they might not be appropriate in context with the location and the time period
  • The colours ar distracting from the message that's trying to be conveyed
  • Using these same colours but using less of them could be effective such as the greens and blues, it would bring attention to the right aspects of the print that you'd want to present.

Overall the most effective and considered colour scheme is shown in experiment 2 and 3. Acknowledging this there was a development in pushing this idea further.

With more neutral  tones considered there was further exploration of using these colours as well as being more limited with the colour palette in consideration of the limitations of the printing technique (lino print)

Experiment 1

This was created in relation to the original colours of the location (penny bazaar) although not directly taken from this it's been inspired by the colours previously used. Green within the context of the space is

Experiment 2

Feedback

This feels appropriate to the location and feels 'old' in the way it looks

I like the use of green and the contrast of them together works well

Experiment 3

Feedback

  • A good use of blue but might be too bright to be used within this context
  • Not much of a 'retro' feel to this although the colours are nice
  • Maybe used a paler blue or a darker blue or the outline to fit better?

In summary

There was a thorough exploration of colour in finding the most appropriate choice for the prints final outcome. More feedback would have been beneficial to the final outcome of this idea. The green and blue tones within these explorations seem to be the most well received.
