Household food waste
Why is it an issue?
What makes this issue important and what are the effects of it?
It's an issue that affects various aspects of the world such as:
Financial
- Every year each person in the UK wastes about £200 on uneaten food individually
- Figures shown in 2015 reveal that we waste £13bn of food every year overall, this hasn't improved very much at all.
- According to the Guardian, a UK household wastes £470 worth of food, which could have been eaten
Environmental
Excess amounts of food waste end up in dumps, this and the vast amount that is produced creates a release of harmful methane. Our carbon footprint is greatly increased when we waste food.
Social
It's definitely as much of a social issue as it is an environmental issue. Ethically speaking it is unnecessary for us to waste food when we have so much of it.
Across many other countries, food is not a luxury that is discarded, we enjoy food and obviously need it but for others, it's a struggle to even find an enough food let alone have the luxury of choice. There is not enough appreciation for food within first world countries, things are taken for granted for too much.
It's a problem that we can individually be solved, with the right tools and knowledge change can be made in order to make a change and also inform a thoroughly considered outcome with various considerations being made within the development.
