Studio brief 02 - Product, range and distribution - Specified research (2)

I contacted Leeds North and West food bank in the hopes of receiving some answers to some questions I had. However, they advised me to contact "The Real Junk Food Project" in order to gain more specified answers to my questions.

I emailed the real junk food project and asked them some questions about their work to gain better insight into what they did in the interest of reducing food waste.

Response

There was an attempt to gain some really insightful answers and perspective into the issue, unfortunately there was no further response to this.

The Real Junk food project

The Real Junk Food Project was opened and created by Adam Smith in 2013. The concept revolves around the overarching idea of using resources which would have been wasted to provide a space with resources and be sold and provide a service to many people and abolish waste. The exchange is based on the idea of the customer's perceptions and how they feel each meal is worth. This allows possibly those earning a lower pay to be able to have a meal, which is a valuable service.

The community is a large part of the success of the cafe with volunteers who work in the cafe as well as the contributes of the supporters and the customers who engage with the idea and space.

Bethesda - Pay As you Feel Cafe

Opened by Denise Baker-McClearn in 2015. The cafe is operated on community food waste operating on a pay as you feel basis.

Their is a large and varied menu which changes daily.

They also provide for dietary needs such as vegan and gluten-free, making it even more accessible.Seeing a project with this concept is really interesting, the popularity of these types of establishments allows them to grow and expand to other areas of the country and be accessed by even more people.

The idea of paying as you feel seems quite different and quite different from the norm, and the perception of having little to benefit from it, however, there is a reliance to this project and a trust, people visiting these cafe's know that they can get food no matter what which is a valuable thing for those maybe not in good financial situations. The large amounts of those attending contribute to the success in their masses, making it an effective and thoughtful campaign. The accessibility of the campaign is noteworthy within understanding how a campaign can be effective.
