Studio brief 02 - Design Practice - Product Range Distribution - Further research

Highlighting certain issues to better understand which topic to focus research on and exploring the idea of focusing on an environmental issue.

Mapping out potential ideas

With these different issues addressed there is room for progress in specific analyzation of a particular issue.

Some highlighted issues

Questioning how resources are used and the impact of it, and some important aspects of it. Looking at sustainability and how it can be better promoted with addressing different issues

"The biggest driver of environmental degradation is the fact that we’re consuming resources at an unsustainable rate" - WWF - UK (on the topic of sustainability)

Unsustainable use of resources

Water
  • Why is water not being sustainability used and be able to be accessed around the world?
  • Around 90% of the world’s total managed water supply is used to grow food
  • How consumption indirectly uses resources, the average production 1 pound of meat uses 2,400 gallons of water.
  • Reducing animal agriculture in order for meat and dairy would greatly reduce the need for such strains on resources and the effect of methane produced by cows.
  • According to a source from the Huffington post "We can save more water by not eating meat for just a few days than we can by not showering for an entire year"
  • According to the Guardian, recycling rates in England have fallen for the first time ever, prompting calls for a tax on packaging and meaning EU targets are now almost certain to be missed
  • "The amount of rubbish sent to recycling plants by householders had been steadily increasing for more than a decade"
Materials (waste)

  • It's apparent from recent data the UK wastes 13bn of food (89 million tonnes ) is wasted annually.
  • Wales of being able to have been able to reduce their food waste by devolved administration and greater availability of food waste collections, showing that sustainability is achievable
  • According to the European Environment Agency (EEA), they have data to suggest that 87 % of citizens agree that resources could be more efficiently used
  • Europe is increasing in its use of resources (17 tonnes per person annually)
  • “The UK is at a tipping point and without radical change to improve England’s household recycling rates the UK will not meet its EU-agreed target of 50% recycling rates by 2020,” said David Palmer-Jones, CEO for Suez recycling and recovery in the UK.
  • Recycling is primarily the responsibility of local authorities, which have suffered dramatic, austerity-driven budget cuts during the years when recycling rates have stalled and now declined.
By addressing these issues there are various issues that are highlighted which can be explored further

Feedback:

Focus issue on a specific aspect of these highlighted issues, make more specific (etc) The more reaccuring theme within these
