Studio brief 01 - Leeds public spaces - Primary research - The space

In order to be better informed of the original environment of Marks and Spencer's in the centre of Leeds in Kirkgate Market visual research is helpful in achieving this.

The structure/design of the building

Entrance wall

This use of type was noteworthy. There is a tone which is established this wall sign, 'Kirkgate' being quite sturdy and structured while also being decorative, its the main focus of the composition. There is a lot of pride conveyed within Kirkgate, especially within the inside of the stall and the patriotism within flags, posters, etc. The date being part of the design also establishes a sense of pride, which is noteworthy to take into consideration when depicting this location.

Whats apparent from walking around the market and viewing the building was the use of colour and type, and how unique each stall within the market was vastly different from each other, each stall was easily identifiable in knowing what was being sold within the design choices. Taking these aspects into consideration was essential to understanding and representing the location within a print visually.

What was also noticeable and noteworthy was the amount of history that was displayed on the walls of the stall itself, again this showed a lot pride within the establishment and its past.

It was quite insightful to see how far the company has come and some noteworthy events and pieces of history that have been significant. All of these visual elements were taken into consideration and furthered an understanding of the space itself
