Studio brief 02 - Product, range and distribution - Very first ideas

Finding an issue -

Initial ideas which were possible avenues to explore further. These ideas were very loose and didn't have any backing up to them yet, they were simply just possible topics.

3 Possible topics

Points to consider when picking an issue
  • Is the issue viable?
  • Is there potential for primary research to develop the idea further?

1. Men's mental health

Is this a viable issue?

It has been identified that suicide amongst young men is a huge threat, to address this within a climate that heavily considers women's health very frequently would be interesting and also identify an issue that stills needs a lot of awareness and activism to change.

Primary research

There is the potential to talk to individuals about how they feel about mental health, possibly personal experiences to gain a real insight into young men's perspective, which isn't highlighted very often.

Homelessness

Is it a viable issue?

Homelessness is something that's a very apparent issue within a city space such as Leeds, it's something that's unavoidable and to explore it could be interesting

Primary research

This issue also has the potential to speak to individuals affected by the issue but also talk to others and what their perception of the issue is which could be interesting to explore the both separately but also look at the contrast of them together.

Dangers of certain foods (meat and dairy industry)

Is it a viable issue?

It's an issue that definitely isn't addressed very often giving it potential and less competition against other campaigns, there are many aspects which could be explored further within this same main topic which makes it a valid issue to explore.

Primary research

Primary research has a few potential avenues, there could be the idea of looking at how others feel about meat and dairy and whether the environmental health and other aspects would affect the way they think about the issue.

Also possibly speak to the many groups which are involved in fighting animal cruelty and creating awareness of certain foods and attitudes which contribute to the cruelty and ongoing environmental impact certain foods have on the world.

Feedback on these topics

Through feedback, there were a few helpful points made in order to help further development and understanding of where to take these topics and which to look at further.

Homelessness

Look into the app - street link

Meat and dairy

Trinity kitchen veganism project

Amy Callaghan - student looking at the same topic (could discuss the issue further with them)

Further development

By hearing this feedback there was then the potential to pick a topic and move forward with it.

With the issue of food, there is also the consideration for another way in which the environment is affected greatly, excess methane is expelled within the mass breeding of cattle but as well as this there is methane released from excess waste in dumps (food waste) Possibly exploring this could be a potential avenue to take research further.
